What We Do

The A&O unit offers practical help and support.

At Diocesan level we maintain an MU presence in all four prisons in Surrey. We organise training for parenting facilitators, support four women’s refuge centres, neonatal units in local hospitals and centres for the homeless. Members make up toilets bags for A&E admissions at local hospitals. Our ‘Away from it all’ (AFIA) scheme provides holidays or day trips for many local families who are in real need.

Throughout the diocese individual branches run mother and toddler groups, marriage preparation courses and parenting classes and help out in Family Contact centres. Through contact with local health visitors we provide support for needy families, particularly at Christmas time.

Occasionally grants are available from the Mothers’ Union, but nearly all the work in the diocese is undertaken by MU volunteers and funded through members’ local fundraising efforts.

Through our collective subscriptions and fundraising MU Guildford contributes to MU designated funds:

  • The Britain and Ireland Fund (which promotes the well-being of families in the UK and Ireland)
  • The Overseas Fund (which pays for training projects and equipment in developing countries)
  • The Relief Fund (which helps support communities affected by natural disasters)
  • MU Guildford gives particular support to the Literacy and Development Project in Africa.
